living-room-designWood Flooring – Hardwood, Engineered Wood, or Laminate?

Hardwood is a Natural Choice

Some houses have wood flooring in every room. Most however feature a mix of wood, carpeting, and tile, if not vinyl and linoleum. Hardwood flooring is relatively expensive, and is not always the best choice for every room in the house, nor is it usually needed in every room. You can of course have wood flooring in any room you choose to, even bathrooms and utility rooms, if you are willing to take the time to keep it well maintained.

Hardwood is a natural choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and great rooms. One problem you might run into is what to do if you don’t want to spend too much for hardwood flooring, but you have several rooms or hallways that run together, and you would prefer to have the same flooring throughout. It can be a dilemma.

laminate-floor-careThere is much to be said about Laminates as Well

If affordability is the issue, laminate can be a good option. Laminate has a number of things going for it. It is much less expensive than hardwood, it can be made to look like hardwood, and it is much easier to install than hardwood flooring. If you can figure out which side of a plank is up, you can install a laminate floor yourself. No nails or screws are needed. The planks simply snap together.

Laminate is also long lasting, though not as much so as is real hardwood, but there’s an upside to that as well. Laminate is as easy to remove as it is to install if the time should come you want to replace your existing floor. One downside of laminate, and a fairly important one, is it will do little if anything to increase the resale value of your home, whereas hardwood flooring tends to make your entire house look more expensive. If on the other hand, you are planning to stay in your home until you are carried out, the resale issue may not be important.

Laminate Floor Care

There are many advantages associated with laminate flooring, which makes this a very popular option for flooring. It is a flooring that can easily be installed, it is not expensive, and it is very durable. The one disadvantage with this type of flooring is that you need to be very careful when you clean it. Laminate flooring planks consist of layers of fiber and wood, and then the floor’s surface has been sealed with a protective coating. It is this coating that gives the flooring its attractive shine. When you use a regular cleaner on the floor, you could damage the protective sealant. Any cleaning solution with ammonia or soap as an ingredient will leave streak marks behind on the surface of the floor and could cause the floor to lose its shine.

An effective method of cleaning it is to sweep and dry mop it. You can use a bristle or plastic broom for sweeping the loose debris and dirt from the surface of the floor. When you sweep the floor, make sure that you are moving the broom gently so you can avoid scratching the flooring from large sized granular dust particles, which could have sharp edges. The vacuum cleaner can be used instead of the broom. Make sure the beater bar is removed from the vacuum first. Once you have swept or vacuum the floor you can dry mop to rid of the rest of the dirt and dust from the laminate flooring. This dry mop has a disposable pad attached to a long stick. This type of dry mop can collect the finer dust particles still clinging to your floor. Move it gently over your floor and if it becomes soaked with dust change to a new clean pad.

The inherent properties of the wood make it resistant to dirt and stains such that they don’t stick to the floor. Most of what is needed is regular vacuuming and mopping with a damp cloth or mop. In addition to this, unlike carpet, wood doesn’t fade and will retain its original color for a long time to come.

Health: because wood doesn’t trap debris in the way carpet does, the air in the house is usually fresher and cleaner. This is especially important for people with allergies or respiratory illnesses who need constant clean air in and around the home.

hardwood-flooring-careThe Advantages of Switching to Wood Floors

by Md Hogue

When thinking of changes that need to be made to our homes to make them more attractive and convenient, it is easy to overlook the importance of the ground beneath our feet. Despite the fact that we use it every single day, it is easy to forget the impact of our floors on our lives. The type of flooring we use affects many aspects of daily life, from the everyday cleaning that is built into our routines to our choices in décor. Therefore it is worth considering when making small upgrades to a household, since it allows a whole new avenue of design and comfort.

One of the main advantages that wood tiling has over its alternatives is the fact that it adds a nice nostalgic look to any room. Choosing décor for your house is one of the easiest ways to express your creativity and add a unique spin on how you are represented to house guests, and other forms of flooring wind up hindering the aesthetic choices you can make. Wood flooring is able to become a form of décor itself, depending on the grain and texture, allowing it to be another choice in choosing the style of the room it is in.

wood-laminate-flooringAnother advantage of wood floors is their increased durability over their competitors. Other forms of flooring can stain and even after a few years need replacement, yet wood floors are built out of naturally strong wood that is reinforced with a light finishing that allows them to last for years on end. Due to the simple nature of their components, they are also extremely easy to clean and repair, making them much less of a hassle then other conventional floors. Due to their hard surface not attracting as many allergens, for people with sensitivities to pollen or dander they are a great way to help cut back on their negative effects.
