holiday-decorating-tipsHoliday Decor: Spend Less & Enjoy More

Have you noticed that retailers start displaying their holiday decorations and merchandise earlier and earlier each year? Some people welcome the early holiday cheer, while others like myself; feel there is too much Christmas too soon.

A scientific poll of 1,000 American adults, 73 percent agree with the statement that “it is annoying that the holiday shopping season has gotten earlier.” Forty-eight percent strongly agree. Just 21 percent disagreed. But, if you are a gung ho ho ho shopper and into the themed holiday decorating then this time of year is definitely your best bet for great deals on all things “holiday”.

Remember when the best deals came after the holiday? Obviously this is still true for items like Christmas cards and holiday wrapping paper. But now, retailers are introducing their holiday discounts early to ensure their stock is sold out by Christmas and, you don’t have to wait and purchase after the holidays only to pack them away for the next 11 months before you can use them.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

The holiday season with its purchasing, wrapping and celebrating substantially increases the amount of waste we generate. However, there are many opportunities for the consumer to reduce, reuse and recycle their remnants of holiday cheer.

Before you buy anything new, take stock of what you already have, what you can still use and discard the rest. Social media sites such as Pinterest can give you great ideas on how to repurpose your current decorations.

3 Steps To Choosing Furniture

furniture-design-stylesDo you ever feel overwhelmed when you walk into a furniture store or are browsing a furniture store website?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. With all the different colors, styles, fabrics, names brands, prices, and materials, it can feel like you just got hit with a ton of bricks

But maybe choosing furniture isn’t really as hard as we think it is. There are 3 easy steps to take to know beforehand what to look for. That way when you’re surfing the web or visiting your local furniture store, you know exactly what you want and won’t end up walking around for hours trying to decide.

The steps are as follows:
1. Choose a style.
2. Choose the color(s).
3. Choose the shade of wood you want.

These steps seem pretty simple, right? Yet, online you will find (what feels like) too many different styles to choose from. But I will simplify it for you here for the moment.

So what are you looking for? Are you needing to add that contemporary twist into your home or maybe that rustic feel? First, we need to understand what these different styles really mean.

The Modern Style is what we would consider being from the 19th century till today. It comes about because of the art style, modernism. The furniture is more of a practical nature and is meant to not be excessive. Especially after World War II, when not many people had an excess of anything. It is usually compact and multifunctional, making it perfect for apartments and smaller homes.

Autumn Decorating Made Easy

halloween-decorationsBeautiful and Easy Autumn Decorating

I admit it. This is my favorite time of year. While friends and family are unabashed lovers of the summer, with its long sunny days, barbecues, and vacations, I wait impatiently each summer for autumn to arrive.

This is decorating season. My season. When the days get shorter, and the nights chillier, our attention is brought back indoors. It is the ideal time for bringing the colors of the harvest season into your home, and onto your porch.

When we think of autumn, a small palette of colors springs to mind. Colors like pumpkin, deep gold, and rust. The colors we associate with this season come straight from the harvest.

fall-decorations-pumpkinsWhy not jazz up your traditional fall displays with something unexpected? A deep pumpkin color looks dramatic with an infusion of eggplant or a fresh apple green. Apple red along with the warm gold adds fun to your tabletop display, centerpiece, or porch vignette.

For the dining room table or sideboard, think outside the box. We tend to create and choose table decorations and vignettes that conform to a square or circle shape. Some of the most dramatic tabletop decorating travels down an imaginary center line of the table, and leads your eye to the other end.

Tabletop candle holders are popular right now in long horizontal shapes. A simple holder in a dark finish of wood or metal would look wonderful with assorted Autumn-hued silk foliage running casually alongside it. If you love the look of hurricane lamps, use three or four, instead of one, then add your autumn foliage at the bases, for a casual “I just carried this in from the outdoors” look.

Don’t stop yourself after simply decorating a dining room table for the season. Look around your house for other opportunities to celebrate the harvest season.

Choosing a first home is arguably one of the most important decisions that you will ever have to make in your life.

It’s not just a case of finding something that you like and going for it; there are many other factors that must be considered first.

You have to find a suitable area, something that is relatively central to your work and family commitments, and of course your home needs to be big enough for your family to grow into as the years go by.

This can be an incredibly stressful process, if you focus on the big picture as opposed to breaking the task down into bitesize chunks and approach it with a holistic and thorough approach.

The main thing of course though, is that you try to enjoy yourself and have fun in the process.

All you need is a little bit of planning! Check out our top 10 tips for decorating and furnishing your first home for a little insight into how you can take much of the stress out of the equation.

Neutrality is important when furnishing your home, given that is allows much more flexibility when it comes to decoration. Opting for colours like black, white and timber tones is helpful as they are easily dressed up with a splash of colour which can be drawn from things such as rugs, furniture, cushions and paintings.

Write Everything Down

There are many things in life which you can get away with ‘winging’; decorating and furnishing your home is not one of them. It is important that you are careful to budget and list things down so that you can gain a clearer scope of how much work you have to achieve, and how much money you have to do so.

We spend the large majority of our lives in bed, though not nearly enough is you ask me. You will have many things to buy over the coming months, none so important as your beds and bedding.

Investing a little extra on something as important as this will not only make your life easier, but it can improve your overall health and well-being.

The different between a good ‘standard’ bed and an excellent one is staggering – bridge the gap and treat yourself, as there are other ways for you to save money during a renovation.
