French Country Interior Decorating

country-kitchenDecorating Your Home With French Country Style

Do you love the curve of a graceful turned leg? Is button upholstery your passion? Is your favorite color “toile”? Just kidding… it’s a pattern! You’ve come to the right place!

French Country is not just a decorating style, it’s a mindset.

On the one hand, it’s a particular look, and always vintage with a hint of nostalgia. On the other hand, anything goes. You can mix materials and textures and just have fun with it.

Some hints: Try to stay with soft yellow, baby blues, and creams. Unless you’re working with a particular French country motif, such as roosters, sunflowers, or lavender.

Use baskets, wire or woven, to get a rustic feel. Keep natural materials in mind while you’re decorating. Natural stone, wool, cotton, wood. And, back to toile. It really defines French country.

country-bedroom-designLet’s start with the most important room, the bedroom. What style bed do you want? You can go from a pared down wrought iron bed… painted a nice cream color. Or, take it all the way to an ornate Sofia bed with button upholstery.

Do you prefer a sleigh bed, or maybe something with a canopy? Any of these will work, as long as you have an armoire. No decent French bedroom would be without an armoire. If it has a crackle paint finish, even better. Do your best to fit some toile into your private oasis.

In the dining room, keep it welcoming, old world, and rustic. Mismatched chairs are okay… just paint them the same color. Pair them with a wooden or metal table. Keep the window treatments light, but indulge yourself with a beautiful chandelier. You may want to use shutters for an old world feel.

bedroom-furniture-suiteBedroom Furniture and Decor: How to Design a Bedroom

Before choosing your bedroom furniture, you should first find out how to design a bedroom rather than just fill it full of the best looking furniture you can find. Your bedroom should be your sanctuary – somewhere you can go to when you want a rest from all the worries and stresses of everyday life.

But even if you are too busy for that, you should at least make it a nice place to be in – even busy people spend more time in the bedroom than in any other room in the average home. So before jumping at all that great bedroom furniture you see in the shopping malls or online, take a little time to think of how to design a bedroom that you will feel comfortable in.

Your bedroom is not a living room or dining room where you feel you have to impress visitors – it is a place for you, and you have no need to impress yourself so make it for you and nobody else – except your partner of course! Here are a few tips you help you:

bedroom-furniture-designs_DSC5429Choose a Focal Point – The Bed!

Just like a well-planned living room, your bedroom works best with a focal point. That takes very little thought – it is the bed! You will spend almost 1/3 of your life in your bed, so take your time in choosing it. Your bed should be big enough for you and your partner, if you have one, without being so big that it totally dominates the room and makes it look small.

Neither should it be too small, where you and your partner cannot get your own sleeping space without disturbing each other. A bedroom should be big enough to allow a good king size bed without it looking too large for the room. Choose a style you like: whether it is slatted, is of a sleigh bed design or even if it has a large fancy headboard with all the bells and whistles makes no difference if it’s what you really want.

go-greenGo Green In Seventeen

Pantone’s early announcement of “Greenery” as the color of the year for 2017 is within the full range of Feng Shui properties. It tells us all about the wood element which is rooted in anything that grows.

Greenery, not just green, is all-encompassing and inclusive. It speaks of early spring and new beginnings and looks to the sun rising in the east. Wood, i.e. vegetation, comes in all shades of green, yet Greenery has the breath of freshness and health. Greenery is lush and bright as it pops with early buds fed by winter water’s long gestation.

Greenery is germane to nature in global dimensions, striving higher with rising energy and reaching out with new tendrils. As a role model, Greenery has a lot to say about connectedness and flexibility. It will find its path around obstacles in a loving embrace, and yet, in excess, it could become a deadly chokehold.

go-green-interior-designIn Feng Shui we love Greenery as a metaphor for motivation and decision-making with firm leadership and work-related orientation.

Therefore, as we move into the New Year during the darkness of winter yin, we plant the seed for happy yang with the birth of Greenery.

There are many way to celebrate Greenery, and we would like to share our Feng Shui tips to get you going on a green path:

outdoor-patio-decoratingPatio Decorating – Ten Simple Patio Decorating Ideas

When Mother Nature begins to warm, thoughts of outdoor entertaining, including B-B-Qs, poolside parties, lunch (or brunch) on the patio, tend to get us thinking of decorating ideas, specifically deck or patio decorating ideas.

Decorating doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor to spruce up an outdoor patio; a few simple changes can do the trick without breaking the bank.

With a plethora of decorating magazines on the stands, interior/exterior decorating websites and design blogs, it’s easy to want more than what the budget will allow. So it is always a good idea, as you formulate decorating ideas for a patio, to determine what your budget can afford.

As you assess the outdoor area in need of a makeover create a list of things that need attention. For example, is the patio furniture looking a bit tattered? Are decorative plants healthy and thriving? What patio decor items could be added or replaced? Maybe a coat of fresh paint to outside walls or a trellis with climbing vines to make an unattractive area more appealing.

Reviewing visual resources such as garden and patio magazines and interior design websites can help generate ideas; use photos to assemble a theme or style suited to your desired effect.
